Areas of application
BORNIT® Joint Tape is used for new construction and rehabilitation of asphalt road surfaces, like:
• longitudinal connection of parallel traffic lanes
• connection with lateral connections and attachments
• connection with kerbstones and gutters
• transverse and longitudinal connections new to old in utility trench construction
• connection between existing and new top layer (cold-hot connections)
• connection to road installations, like manhole covers, valve covers and hydrant caps, road gullies

Type and properties
BORNIT® Joint Tape is a high-quality bituminous joint tape made from polymer-modified bitumen, characterised by the following material properties: easy to apply, secure adhesion to the respective substrate, flexible with excellent elongation properties, and permanently watertight. BORNIT® Joint Tape is used for joint formation and the sealing of connections in asphalt road construction. BORNIT® Joint Tape meets the requirements of TL Fug-StB 24, performance class B.
Surface
All substrates must be dry, clean, frost-free and free from substances that prevent adhesion (e.g. oils, greases, release agents). Loose particles must be removed and damp edges must be dried. When installing the mixture, care must be taken to ensure that the joint flanks have a uniform surface quality and are well compacted. Road surface installations must be cleaned. Before application, the joint flanks must be pre-treated with a primer – BORNIT® Hot Compound Primer Spray or BORNIT® Hot Compound Primer – to ensure good coverage. Allow the primer to dry for approx. 15 minutes and apply the joint tape immediately afterwards. The use of a primer is mandatory to ensure perfect adhesion and joint formation in accordance with TL Fug-StB 24.
Processing
To do this, lay out the BORNIT® Joint Tape, remove the release paper and cut to length. At the corners of a cut-out, the tape is butt-jointed. Once the primer has dried (approx. 15 minutes), the top of the joint tape is carefully heated with a propane torch until the surface becomes tacky. Place the heated joint tape against the joint face and press it onto the contact surface using a flat tool or by hand. The flexible bond with the hot asphalt to be applied subsequently is achieved by the melting of the joint tape in the joint area. Experience shows that the temperature of the asphalt surface to be laid is sufficient to heat a 10 mm wide tape continuously to +120 °C, thereby creating a secure bond. The joint tape must be installed with an overhang of approx. 5–10 mm (flush with the surface in the case of mastic asphalt) above the road surface and protected from being driven over by site traffic. After the hot mix has been laid, the protruding part of the joint tape is rolled smooth. This creates a rivet head on the surface, which provides additional sealing and a secure closure of the asphalt edge. If the delivered asphalt does not have the required laying temperature, the joint tape cannot melt completely. A secure seal of the joint connection is then not guaranteed!
Cross-section drawing:

Profile tolerances of up to 10% are due to manufacturing processes!
Note: In accordance with the applicable ZTV Fug-StB, the width of the joint tape must not be less than 10 mm. The use of joint tapes with a width of 8 mm must therefore be agreed in the specifications, and the client must be informed of this deviation from the applicable ZTV Fug-StB.
