Areas of application
BORNIT® Joint Tape is used for new construction and rehabilitation of asphalt road surfaces, like:
• longitudinal connection of parallel traffic lanes
• connection with lateral connections and attachments
• connection with kerbstones and gutters
• transverse and longitudinal connections new to old in utility trench construction
• connection between existing and new top layer (cold-hot connections)
• connection to road installations, like manhole covers, valve covers and hydrant caps, road gullies

Type and properties
BORNIT® Joint Tape is a high-quality bitumen joint tape made of polymer bitumen, which is characterized by the following material properties: easy to apply, secure adhesion to the respective substrate, flexible with excellent stretching properties, permanently tight.
BORNIT® Joint Tape is used for the construction and sealing of connections and seams in asphalt road construction. BORNIT® Joint Tape is monitored externally and fulfils the requirements of TL Fug-StB 15

Surface
All substrates must be dry, clean, frost-free and free from separating substances (e.g. oils, greases, separating agents). Loose particles must be removed, moist faces must be dried. Upon application of the asphalt mix, it should be observed that the seam flanks have a uniform surface quality and good compaction. Road installations must be cleaned. Prior to application, the fusion faces must be generously primed with BORNIT® Hot Compound Primer Spray or BORNIT® Hot Compound Primer. Let the primer dry for 15 minutes and apply the joint tape immediately thereafter. Using a primer is specified for proper adhesion and seam formation according to TL Fug-StB 15.

Processing
For that, unroll BORNIT® Joint Tape, remove the separating paper and cut to length. At the corner points of a breakup, the band is bluntly pushed against each other After the pre-coat dried (approx. 15 minutes) carefully heat the upper side of the joint tape with a propane gas flame until the surface becomes sticky. Align the heated joint tape and press it to the contact surface with a flat tool or by hand.
The flexible connection with the subsequently cast hot asphalt is established by fusion of the joint tape in the seam area. From experience, the temperature of the asphalt layer to be cast is sufficient to continuously heat a 10 mm wide tape to +120 °C and thus establish a secure connection. The joint tape must be inserted protruding by approx. 5 mm - 10 mm (flush for mastic asphalt) above road level and must be protected from impact by construction site traffic. Following casting of the hot asphalt, the protruding joint tape is burnished. Thus, a rivet heat is formed at the surface, which provides for additional sealing and secure closure of the asphalt edge. If the delivered asphalt should not have the required casting temperature, the joint tape cannot melt completely. Secure sealing of the seam connection is then not guaranteed!

Profile tolerances of up to 10 % are due to production technology!

Note: According to ZTV Fug-StB 15, the width of the joint tape must not be less than 10 mm. The use of joint tapes with a width of 8 mm must therefore be agreed in the specifications and the client must be informed of this deviation from ZTV Fug-StB 15.
