Areas of application
BORNIT® Crack Flex is applied cold and used for continuous repair of asphalt traffic areas, in order to prolong their service life at low personnel expenses and costs. BORNIT® Crack Flex® penetrates well into cracks with a width of more than 2 mm, and after drying forms an elastic sealing compound for longitudinal and transverse cracks in asphalt surfaces. Narrower cracks are flexibly and crack-bridgingly covered with the viscous material. The material is applied either manually with the BORNIT® Hand Applicator or using the processing equipment BORNIT® Flexomat 3.1 with the “Crack Module SpeedUp” attached for machine application.

Type and properties
BORNIT® Crack Flex is a highly flexible, polymer-modified bitumen emulsion with special fillers for repairing cracks in asphalt road surfaces. Once set, the material is weather-proof and UV-resistant. After thorough drying, the solvent-free product forms a resilient and elastic crack bridge against penetrating surface water. BORNIT® Crack Flex is particularly adhesive to the substrate and after drying, in connection with the chippings, results in a high-grip surface of the repaired areas.

Surface
The substrate must be firm, clean (if necessary, clean cracks with compressed air in advance) and free from separating substances (oil, grease, dust, etc.). It may be matt moist, but not wet. Properly repair larger defects in advance with BORNIT® Repair Mortar or BORNIT® Reactive Asphalt.

Processing
In principle, crack repairs should be performed at temperatures above +10 °C and in continuously dry weather (at least in the subsequent 6 hours).

Manual processing:
Prior to manual application, BORNIT® Crack Flex must be stirred up well mechanically with a slow-running agitator. Then the compound is uniformly applied along the crack with the BORNIT® Hand Applicator (if necessary, several layers are applied to work the material well into the crack). Directly afterwards, generously spread dry high-quality 1/3 chippings on the treated surfaces. Depending on the weather and sufficient covering with chippings, the thus treated crack areas are load-resistant after 1-2 hours. Further drying and follow-up compaction take place under normal road traffic. Continuously dry weather of at least 12 hours must be observed

Note: Complete drying of the material may take longer than one day and depends on the weather and the crack width-dependent material quantity. During this period, driving on the repaired areas can result in excess material exiting moist at the surface, which, however, does not affect the final properties. Driving over freshly repaired areas should take place at a limited speed only, if possible, and with a warning concerning the loose chippings.

Machine processing:
With the processing equipment BORNIT® Flexomat 3.1 with the BORNIT® Crack Module SpeedUp attached, longer cracks or larger distances (e.g. cracks in the centre seam) can be treated with BORNIT® Crack Flex® very quickly and effectively. With a hand-operated application lance (a combination of spraying nozzle and an accelerator spray nozzle), the material is thus liquefied under pressure and inserted deeper into the crack than with the hand applicator. Simultaneously, the material is uniformly applied in the required layer thickness at the surface, before chippings are spread
on top. A uniform and visually clean surface of the repaired areas is achieved by using a spreader cart (BORNIT® Streufix 2.0), using which the high-quality 1/3 high-grade chippings are optimally applied in the right quantity. By using the reaction component BORNIT® SpeedUp an accelerated drying is effected. By the combination of two separate spray nozzles during the application, an additional, prior mixing of the two components or the use of a mixing nozzle is not necessary. An additional cleaning effort is thus avoided. The crack areas treated in this way are passable after a few minutes. Please obtain detailed documentation for the processing equipment separately.

Important Note:
The causes for cracks in asphalt are normally stresses and forces caused by most different influencing factors (e.g. insufficient load-bearing capacity of the foundation, defects during asphalting, etc.). Following an object-dependent service life of the repaired areas, cracks may therefore occur again and thus make repeated treatment with BORNIT® Crack Flex necessary. Permanent repair of these damaged areas is only possible by eliminating the causes. A more durable repair of cracks is possible by proper milling out and subsequent filling with suitable hot sealing compounds (e.g. BORNIT® Hot Sealing TL). Crack Flex does not adhere to old substrates with hot sealings.
