Areas of application
BORNIT® Mastic Asphalt is used for repair work in road maintenance. It can be used for closing breakups of any kind, for example, potholes and frost damages, as well as for levelling shafts, drains and milled grooves (e.g., after removing road markings), but also for smaller asphalt work. BORNIT® Mastic Asphalt can be used for maintenance measures on all roads of all construction classes as well as on driveways, in courtyards, on footpaths, cycle paths as well as parking lots. BORNIT® Mastic Asphalt 20 is applied in layer thicknesses of 5 – 15 mm and BORNIT® Mastic Asphalt 50 in layers of 10 – 30 mm, resp.
Type and properties
BORNIT® Mastic Asphalt is a hot workable repair compound in road maintenance. It consists of a mixture of bitumen (30/45), mineral additives and high-grade chippings 2/5 (only for BORNIT® Mastic Asphalt 50). BORNIT® Mastic Asphalt can be recycled and does not contain any volatile solvents. Following application and cooling, the repaired surfaces are immediately traversable.
Depending on intended use and application thickness, BORNIT® Mastic Asphalt is being offered with various aggregates:
Grain size 0-2 mm = Mastic Asphalt 20
Grain size 0-5 mm = Mastic Asphalt 50

Surface
The substrate must be dry, free from loose particles, dirt or any separating agents. The surface temperature must be above +5 °C. Upon application of a thin layer or for improvement of adhesion, resp., we recommend priming of substrate and edges of the existing materials with BORNIT® Hot Compound Primer Fix or BORNIT® Bitumen Primer Spray. BORNIT® Bitumen Primer Spray and BORNIT® Hot Compound Primer Fix are delivered in a special spray can with the easy-to-use 360° tilting valve. Thus, small surfaces can be easily primed without having to use any further tools. Following thorough drying of the primer, application of BORNIT® Mastic Asphalt can be started.
Processing
First, remove the cardboard packaging. Then heat up BORNIT® Mastic Asphalt under constant stirring to the processing temperature (+180 to +230 °C) in a mastic asphalt cooker. Apply BORNIT® Mastic Asphalt onto the surface to be repaired and spread it with a rake or trowel. Then, prior to cooling, spread high-grade chippings onto the surface. BORNIT® Mastic Asphalt is immediately traversable after cooling. For vertical joint flanks, we recommend using BORNIT® Joint Tape. BORNIT® Mastic Asphalt does not have to be subsequently compacted by vehicular traffic.
