Areas of application
BORNIT® Flexbit is used for maintaining aged, bituminous flat-roof coatings as well as for protecting new concrete roof surfaces (e.g., prefabricated garages) against adverse weather conditions (roof pitch of at least 3%). The product can be used on concrete, plaster, solidly filled masonry or bituminous substrates. BORNIT® Flexbit is not suitable for corrugated bituminous sheets. BORNIT® Flexbit can also be used for protecting components in contact with the ground from ground moisture (not for structural waterproofing according to DIN 18533) as well as for intermediate waterproofing under screed on horizontal surfaces, as, e.g., balconies, terraces, basement floors and tiling. BORNIT® Flexbit is suitable for polymer-bitumen sheeting and also serves as an adhesive (for gravel surfacing) for fastening spread out slate chippings or other suitable mineral spreading materials on roofs with a pitch of up to 25 %. By applying a new layer of chippings on weathered, bituminous roofing membranes, a higher resistance against weather impacts and an attractive appearance are achieved.
Type and properties
BORNIT® Flexbit is a high-quality, rubber-latex-modified bitumen emulsion for seamless, resilient and waterproof protective coatings for most different areas of application in building construction and civil engineering. In its hardened state, the coating is weather- and UV-resistant and may be used inside as well as outside. The product is free from organic solvents (solvent-free) and, following thorough drying, forms a highly elastic, crack-bridging protective coating against water and moisture.
BORNIT® Flexbit meets the requirements (Annex 313 / Items 10.1 and 10.2 – Bitumen-based building products) of the state quality label for sustainable buildings (Quality Label for Sustainable Buildings (QNG)). The label is issued by the German Federal Ministry for Housing, Urban Development and Construction.

Advantages
- highly elastic and crack-bridging
- manufactured ready for use
- high fracture strain of 370 %
- free from organic solvents (solvent-free)
- also suitable for polymer-bitumen sheeting
Surface
The substrate must be firm, stable, clean and free from any separating substances (oil, grease, dust, etc.). It may be slightly moist, but not wet. Standing water must be removed. For use on flat roofs, there must be a sufficient roof pitch (at least 3%).
Processing
BORNIT® Flexbit is manufactured ready for processing – it might have to be stirred up briefly. Apply with a previously moistened polyamide-yarn paint roller, broom, small or large brush or suitable spraying equipment (airless). In case of highly absorbent and sanding substrates, prime with BORNIT® Grundbit. Coating is undertaken with undiluted BORNIT® Flexbit in at least 2 layers. The second coat is applied following drying of the previous one. BORNIT® Glass Fabric 58 embedded into the coating increases stability against mechanical stress. Following thorough drying, BORNIT® Flexbit is waterproof and weather-resistant. BORNIT® Flexbit must never be applied in case of rain, too high air humidity (mist) or frost (sensitive to frost!). During processing, the substrate and ambient temperatures must not undercut +5 °C and should not exceed +30 °C. Clean work equipment with water immediately after use. Protect the fresh coating from rain. Until complete and thorough hardening, protect BORNIT® Flexbit from frost.
Upon spreading out slate chippings, these must be spread out in a generous layer and rolled-in. Remove excess material only after complete setting. Consumption amounts to approx. 2-4 kg/m² of slate chippings.
