Areas of application
BORNIT® Bitumen Primer is indispensable as a primer for pre-treating substrates for bitumen waterproofing to be applied hot as well as for laying roof and weldable sheeting. BORNIT® Bitumen Primer adheres to concrete, masonry, plaster and almost all other substrates common in construction as well as metal. BORNIT® Bitumen Primer is not suitable for application on expanded and extruded polystyrene. BORNIT® Bitumen Primer is also recommended as a water-repellent primer for the cold workable bitumen topcoats BORNIT® Roof Varnish, BORNIT® Corrosion Preventer, BORNIT® Bitumen Coating and for BORNIT® Bitumen Adhesive.
Note: According to the circular of BG Bau (Building Trade Association) (11/05), emulsion-based bitumen primers (e.g. BORNIT® Grundbit) are expressly recommended for work indoors!

Type and properties
BORNIT® Bitumen Primer is a quick-drying, spreadable and sprayable, solvent-containing bitumen primer. Due to its low viscosity and its high penetrating capability, BORNIT® Bitumen Primer solidifies the substrate, binds dust and loose particles, evens out the different absorbencies of the substrate andserves as an adhesion promoter for subsequent bituminous coatings.
Tested according to AIB.

Advantages
  • easiest handling, since manufactured ready for use
  • good adhesion properties, quick-drying
  • economical and cost-cutting, due to low equipment and material costs and effort
  • high penetrating capability into the substrate

Surface
The substrate must be dry, clean, frost- and grease-free. Loose particles, damaged concrete and plaster as well as cracks and holes must be repaired in advance.

Processing
BORNIT® Bitumen Primer must be stirred up prior to processing! BORNIT® Bitumen Primer is applied by brushing, rolling or spraying it onto the substrate. Only perform subsequent work following complete and thorough drying! At normal temperatures, the product is ready for use without warming and diluting. The processing temperature (ambient and substrate temperatures) must not be in the frost range and should not exceed +35 °C. Do not use indoors! For interior spaces (e.g. floor sealing with weldable sheeting), the solvent-free bitumen primer BORNIT® Grundbit is recommended.

Consumption
approx. 0.2 l/m² (depending on absorbency and structure of the substrate, consumption can vary up or down, resp.).
